A car driven by 57-year-old Todd Landry crashed into a crowd during the Lao New Year celebration in New Iberia, Louisiana, leaving at least 15 people injured, including his wife, authorities reported.
The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Savannakhet Street and Melancon Road. Local law enforcement said Landry was arrested at the scene and faces multiple charges, including driving while impaired, careless operation, open container, and 18 counts of first-degree negligent injuring. Officials currently believe the crash was not intentional.
Among the injured, one woman—identified as Landry’s wife—suffered severe injuries, including 12 broken ribs and a broken right arm. She was initially treated locally and later transferred to a Baton Rouge hospital for specialized care.
In total, thirteen victims were taken to nearby hospitals, with two requiring airlift to higher-level trauma centers. Authorities continue to assess the condition of the other injured, some of whom are reported to be in critical condition.
Festival organizers canceled evening music performances and alcohol sales following the crash, expressing deep concern for the community and pledging support to those affected.
