A Clifton, New Jersey family has been reunited with their dog just days after the pet was taken from their home’s back porch, with authorities confirming the woman seen in surveillance footage has now been identified.
The incident involved William Chan, a Clifton, NJ homeowner, whose 7-year-old dog, Rocky—a Shih Tzu–Yorkshire Terrier mix—went missing on Easter Sunday after getting loose outside the family’s home.
According to the family, Rocky ran out into the street before returning to the property. However, home surveillance footage captured a woman and a young boy approaching the dog and taking him from the porch.
Video recorded by a Ring camera shows the child chasing Rocky in the yard while holding a blanket. Moments later, a woman exits a black SUV, and the pair corner the dog as he runs up the back steps toward the house. They then grab Rocky and leave the scene in the vehicle.
At the time of the incident, William Chan and his family were vacationing in Hawaii. The dog was being cared for by Chan’s nephew, Chris Chan, who witnessed the events through the surveillance footage.
“In the video, he’s on the property, and then he’s coming back up the steps, trying to get home,” Chris Chan said.
“When he goes out, he knows to go to the back steps,” William Chan added.
The family noted that Rocky was wearing a harness and identification tag when he was taken.
Rocky was returned to the family three days later, on Wednesday, bringing relief to the household after the unsettling ordeal.
Police confirmed they have identified the woman seen in the video and said she is cooperating with detectives. Authorities have not yet stated whether any charges will be filed in connection with the incident.
