The late Catherine Nyamato, a former nominated Member of Parliament, made history as the first female legislator from the Gusii community. However, tragedy struck while she was engaged in conversation with local youth in Kijauri, Nyamira county, leading to her untimely death.
Kisii senator Richard Onyonka expressed his heartfelt condolences on social media, honoring the legacy of the accomplished politician.
The nation has been plunged into mourning once more following the passing of distinguished political figure and ex-nominated Member of Parliament, Catherine Nyamato.
Nyamato achieved her position as a legislator after being appointed by the late former president Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, through the then-ruling party KANU.
What caused Catherine Nyamato's death?
Reports indicate that she collapsed and died by the roadside close to her farm in Kijauri.
As per accounts, she was discussing an ongoing community project with the youth when the incident occurred.
Senator Richard Onyonka expressed his sorrow alongside the people of Nyamira and Kisii counties as they mourn the former MP.
"I am profoundly saddened to stand with the residents of Nyamira, Kisii, and the Nation in grieving the passing of Hon. Catherine Moraa Nyamato, a remarkable individual, a pioneer, and an unyielding advocate for justice and women's rights," Onyonka stated in part.
The senator paid a heartfelt tribute to the departed ex-MP, describing her as a symbol of bravery and resolve.

"Hon. Nyamato carved a path as the first nominated Member of Parliament from the Gusii community. Her unwavering commitment to combatting gender-based violence, detrimental cultural practices, and systemic inequality has established a lasting legacy that will inspire future generations," he noted.
Senator Onyonka commended Nyamato's leadership abilities, particularly her role as the secretary-general of the League of Kenyan Women Voters and her significant contributions to civic education.
Moreover, he mentioned that Nyamato empowered women to recognize their potential, enabling them to claim their rightful place in the leadership of the nation.
"Her contributions transcended politics; they were profoundly personal and focused on uplifting the most marginalized within our communities. On behalf of the citizens of Kisii County and as their Senator, I extend my deepest sympathies to the Nyamato family, friends, and all those whose lives she impacted through her compassion, strength, and activism," he further added.
"May her spirit find eternal peace, and may her legacy continue in the relentless pursuit of justice, equality, and inclusive leadership."
