Residents of Makueni County who live close to the Thange River have prevailed in a legal battle against the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC). The case included a 2015 oil leak that harmed their water, land, and well-being.

The court ruled on July 11, 2025, that KPC must compensate the residents with KSh 2.1 billion. In order to restore the environment, KPC will also give KSh 900 million to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

And unless KPC cleans up on its own. The business will spend more than KSh 3.8 billion in total.

KPC was transporting fuel via a pipeline near the Thange River when the oil leak occurred. Numerous villages along the Thange River basin had their water and soil contaminated by the leak. A lot of people lost their access to clean water, crops, and animals. A few residents fell ill.

Christine Mueni Musa, one of the women, said in court that her husband passed away from cancer. She fell unwell, and so did her family. She thinks their health issues were brought on by the pollution.

According to the court, KPC failed to properly maintain its pipeline. Additionally, it did not install safety systems or identify the leak in a timely manner. Judges ruled that KPC and NEMA violated the law by failing to uphold citizens' rights to a hygienic and safe environment.

KPC is now given 120 days to repair the water and land damage. KPC is required to pay NEMA if they complete the task.

The court provided a thorough explanation of the KES 2.25 million that KPC is required to pay.The court granted KES 2.25 million for the 15 victims' lost expectation of life.

3,075 villagers were involved in this case when it started almost ten years ago. In Kenyan history, it is among the most significant environmental compensation rulings. Many believe it will result in future firms being more responsible and safe.
