Tori Branum, a Republican candidate for Georgia's 12th congressional district and a MAGA supporter, claims to be the informant that led to the ICE raid at the Hyundai plant in rural Bryan County.
"This is what I voted for," Branum told Rolling Stone, "to get rid of a lot of illegal immigrants." And what I voted for is actually happening."
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms reported that about 450 persons were arrested as a result of the raid. This is one of the most extensive raids in ICE history. Many of the workers are from South Korea and have H1-B visas, which allow foreign workers to stay in the United States for up to six months.
According to an attorney for the arrested workers, many are engineers and equipment installers brought in for the highly specialized work of getting an electric battery plant operational. Some were shown being shackled with chains around their hands, ankles and waists in video released by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The lawyer representing these workers said that no company in the U.S. makes the machines that are used in the Georgia battery plant, so they had to come from abroad to install or repair equipment on-site — work that would take about three to five years to train someone in the U.S. to do, he said.
Threading that needle of seeking out investment by South Korean businesses, as Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has done, while supporting the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown is going to be wild to see.
This is what you all wanted, though. Tori Branum isn’t even in office yet and she’s already a proud destroyer of lives.
