An Ohio mother, Alyssa Smith, 33, has been sentenced to three years in prison after her six-month-old baby, Royal Bates, was mauled to death by a pit bull known for its aggressive behavior. Smith pleaded guilty to felony child endangerment in connection with the April 2024 attack that occurred in Marion County, near Columbus.
Prosecutors said Smith and the baby’s father, Blake Bates, left Royal alone with Bates’ dog, Kilo, despite both knowing the animal had a violent history. While the adults were not present, Kilo suddenly attacked the infant, causing fatal injuries to his skull. First responders captured in police body camera footage arrived to a horrific scene as they tried to save the child, but he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The pit bull was euthanized soon after the incident.
Marion County Prosecutor Ray Grogan said the case highlights a mother’s failure to protect her child, calling Smith’s actions “a tragic example of irresponsibility that cost a baby his life.” Judge Todd Anderson imposed the maximum sentence allowed under the law, emphasizing that parents have a duty to safeguard their children.
Blake Bates has also pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for his role in the child’s death and is awaiting sentencing, scheduled for October 27. Prosecutors said they intend to pursue a lengthy sentence for Bates, citing additional charges of felony strangulation and escape while in custody. Grogan added that Bates ignored prior warnings about Kilo’s aggression after the dog had previously attacked a neighborhood child, demonstrating “recklessness that demands severe consequences.”
Royal Bates was remembered as a cheerful baby who adored his older sister, according to his obituary. His death has sparked renewed conversations in the community about the dangers of keeping aggressive animals and the responsibilities of pet owners.
