Junior Dutra Brazilian fashion influencer blamed cosmetic surgeon over ‘faulty’ fox eyes surgery before dying from complications

A Brazilian fashion influencer has died following reported complications from a cosmetic procedure intended to create the popular “fox eyes” look.

Adair Mendes Dutra Junior, known online as Junior Dutra, passed away on October 3. The 30-year-old social media personality, who had more than 123,000 Instagram followers, was widely known in Brazil’s fashion scene for his bold style and candid posts about beauty standards.

According to reports from Brazilian outlet Feed TV, Dutra had previously claimed he developed an infection after undergoing a cosmetic procedure in March, performed by well-known plastic surgeon Fernando Garbi. In an interview last month, the influencer said he was hospitalized for the infection and shared videos showing his swollen and bruised face as he received follow-up care under the supervision of a dermatologist.

Dutra’s close friend, Gean Souza, told Quem magazine that on October 3, the influencer became severely ill and short of breath before being taken to a public hospital’s emergency room, where he later passed away.

Before his death, Dutra had filed a lawsuit and a formal request for investigation against Dr. Garbi, accusing him of illegal medical practice, fraudulent misrepresentation, and serious bodily injury, according to Portal Leo Dias.

The “fox eyes” procedure, which aims to lift the outer corners of the eyes for a more almond-shaped, feline appearance, has gained international attention among influencers and celebrities over the past few years.

In response to Dutra’s death, Dr. Garbi’s legal team released a statement through his Instagram account, denying any connection between the March procedure and the influencer’s passing. Attorney Marcelo Cheli wrote that “any claims suggesting Dr. Garbi’s involvement are made by individuals seeking moments of notoriety,” and said legal action would be taken against those spreading defamatory statements.

Souza remembered Dutra as a dreamer with ambitions that went far beyond his social media presence.

“He still had many dreams to fulfill,” Souza said. “He wanted to travel, to be closer to his family. What we want now is justice.”

According to his social media profiles, Junior Dutra was based in São Paulo, Brazil, where he worked as a fashion stylist and content creator.
