A North Carolina man, Kameron Lamont Gilchrist, 25, has been arrested for allegedly unhooking an IV from his arm and deliberately spraying HIV-positive blood at two hospital employees while undergoing treatment at the University of North Carolina’s Rex Hospital in Raleigh. The incident reportedly occurred on March 21 while Gilchrist was receiving care for diabetes and psychiatric issues.

According to an arrest warrant filed by authorities, Gilchrist “unlawfully, willfully and feloniously assaulted a hospital employee by spraying HIV blood into the eyes of the victim” as the medical staff were performing their duties. The violent outburst left both healthcare workers exposed to HIV and suffering from eye irritation as a result of the assault.

Gilchrist was arrested nearly six months later, on September 11, following ongoing medical and psychiatric treatment. He now faces two counts of assault causing physical injury to emergency medical personnel. Police records indicate that the hospital coordinated with law enforcement during the investigation, ensuring the safety of other staff and patients.

UNC Health Rex officials stated they are working closely with authorities and have reinforced internal security measures to better protect hospital employees. “We are fully committed to supporting our staff and pursuing justice in any cases involving violence or threats against them,” a hospital spokesperson said.

Gilchrist is being held on a $25,000 bond and is expected to appear in court on December 8. If convicted, he could face up to seven years in prison.
