Kidane Haile Accused of Strangling Girlfriend Kathleen Carrig and Setting Fire That Killed Her and Their 4-Day-Old Son Noah in Buffalo, New York

A 30-year-old New York man, identified as Kidane Haile, has been charged with second-degree murder after allegedly strangling his girlfriend, Kathleen “Katie” Carrig, and setting their Buffalo home on fire while she and their 4-day-old baby son, Noah, were inside.

According to the Erie County District Attorney’s Office, emergency crews from the Buffalo Fire Department responded to a call about a fire at an apartment on Norwood Avenue around 8:35 p.m. on October 18. When firefighters entered the residence, they discovered Carrig, 29, and her newborn son unresponsive. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Haile was transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation, released on October 22, and then taken into custody, District Attorney Michael Keane confirmed.

“We are saddened by the tragic death of this young mother and her newborn baby. My thoughts remain with the family of these victims as we continue to seek answers and justice,” Keane said in a statement.

Investigation Details

The Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Kathleen Carrig died from asphyxia due to strangulation, ruling her death a homicide. Prosecutors allege that Haile intentionally killed Carrig before setting the apartment on fire, using gasoline as an accelerant.

“The allegations are that Mr. Haile murdered Kathleen Carrig by strangulation, and that he had done so prior to intentionally starting the fire,” Keane said during a press conference.

The cause of death for baby Noah Carrig remains under investigation, though officials expect to release findings soon.

The blaze caused an estimated $100,000 in property damage, according to WIVB.

About the Victims

An obituary described Kathleen “Katie” Carrig as a devoted mother, a loving daughter and sister, and a beloved friend to many. She is survived by her parents, sister, and a large extended family who are mourning her loss.

Legal Proceedings

Haile, who worked as a college financial aid advisor at the University at Buffalo, was arraigned on second-degree murder charges and is being held without bail. If convicted, he faces 25 years to life in prison.

Authorities said additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
