A Connecticut woman, Kristen Hogan of Ridgefield, has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to poison her estranged husband by spiking his wine with antifreeze.

According to Connecticut State Police, Hogan poured antifreeze into a bottle of wine and iced tea at her husband’s home earlier this summer. The couple had been in the middle of a bitter custody dispute over their child when the incident occurred.

On August 10, the 34-year-old husband reportedly drank a small amount of the tainted wine and became violently ill, waking up repeatedly throughout the night. The following morning, he began vomiting and called his mother, who found him slurring his words, staggering, and continuing to vomit.

He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors initially suspected a stroke. Tests later confirmed that he was suffering from ethylene glycol poisoning — the main chemical in antifreeze. The man was admitted to the ICU, placed on dialysis, and treated for renal failure.

Investigators seized the wine and sent it to the Connecticut Forensic Laboratory for testing. The husband told detectives he suspected Hogan after noticing that she had connected to his Wi-Fi while he was away from home, even though they no longer lived together. Despite the separation, Hogan still had full access to the property.

The husband told police that Hogan stood to gain full ownership of the house and full custody of their child if he died. Detectives later found incriminating internet searches on Hogan’s phone, including terms such as “potassium cyanide,” “potassium ferricyanide,” “citrate-cyanide,” “potassium thiocyanate,” and “monoethylene glycol.”

When questioned, Hogan initially denied knowing what the chemicals were. Further searches revealed she had also looked up how much of these substances could be fatal. She later claimed she had purchased monoethylene glycol from Amazon to clean carpets at her mother’s home, insisting it never left her parents’ house.

When confronted about the poisoned wine, Hogan denied the allegations but later told detectives she “never wanted to kill him, just make him sick as payback for being mentally abusive.” She admitted not knowing how much of the chemical she poured into the bottle.

Investigators also noted that Hogan had recently begun acting unusually kind toward her husband, even offering to visit and cook for him — behavior described as “out of the ordinary” for their strained relationship.

Kristen Hogan was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of interfering with an officer. She is being held on a $1 million bond.
