A Murfreesboro, Tennessee skydiving instructor has died in a tragic mid-air accident after becoming separated from his student during a tandem jump shortly after exiting a plane.

The victim, identified as 35-year-old Justin Robert Fuller, also known as Justin Fuller Spidey, was killed on Saturday afternoon, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department.

Authorities said Fuller and a 46-year-old student had just jumped in tandem when the pair became stuck on the side of the aircraft. Moments later, Fuller somehow became detached from the student and plummeted without a parachute.

The student narrowly survived after their emergency parachute deployed, eventually becoming caught in a tree in a wooded area. The student was trapped in the harness for several hours before being rescued, WSMV reported.

Fuller’s body was later located by a Metro Nashville Police Department helicopter searching the surrounding area. Three other skydivers who had jumped earlier landed safely, and the aircraft — operated by Go Skydive Nashville — returned without incident to John C. Tune Airport.

Authorities have not yet confirmed why Fuller’s reserve parachute did not deploy, or whether he had one at all. The cause of the separation remains under investigation.

Go Skydive Nashville released a statement following the accident, expressing condolences and emphasizing its commitment to safety:

“Go Skydive Nashville remains dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of training, safety, and professionalism. At this time, the team is focused on supporting those affected by this tragedy.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is leading the investigation into the incident, with support from local authorities.
