Myrtle Beach, South Carolina — A protest took an unexpected turn when Mary Moriarty, 59, of Surfside Beach, was arrested during a “No King” demonstration on Saturday afternoon — and later photographed sticking out her tongue while in custody.
According to the Myrtle Beach Police Department (MBPD), officers observed a woman in a vehicle brandishing a firearm near the protest area around 2:09 p.m. Authorities say the situation was contained without incident, and the suspect was taken into custody shortly afterward.
Police identified the woman as Mary Moriarty, who now faces charges of pointing and presenting a firearm. She is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
Images of Moriarty’s playful expression during her arrest have since gone viral on social media, drawing mixed reactions from the public — with some criticizing her actions while others found humor in her defiant gesture.
The “No King” protest was reportedly part of a series of small demonstrations in the area expressing opposition to monarchical symbolism and government elitism.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported and the protest remained largely peaceful aside from the firearm-related incident.
