Tragedy struck early Saturday morning in Chicago’s South Side after Odeal Curley, a 40-year-old woman, was fatally shot while getting off a private bus in the city’s Fuller Park neighborhood.
According to Chicago police, the incident occurred around 12:40 a.m. near West 54th Place and South Shields Avenue. Authorities say the victim was exiting the bus when someone inside the vehicle pulled out a gun and opened fire, striking her in the thigh.
Emergency responders from the Chicago Fire Department treated Curley on the scene before transporting her to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, ABC7 Chicago reported.
While police initially withheld the victim’s identity, friends and relatives confirmed on social media that the deceased was Odeal Curley.
Her cousin, Krissy Curley, wrote on Facebook:
“Damn cousin Odeal Curley so sorry this happened to you. Love you.”
A look at Curley’s Facebook page indicated she was a mother of two young sons.
As of Saturday afternoon, no arrests have been made, and Area One detectives are continuing to investigate the fatal shooting. Police have not released any information regarding a potential motive, whether the suspect and victim knew each other, or whether the shooting was targeted or random.
