An 11-year-old girl, Sophia Ballinger, has tragically passed away at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville.
Family members confirmed that Sophia died surrounded by loved ones after several days of being hospitalized in critical condition. She was a 6th grader at Portland West Middle School in Sumner County, Tennessee.
According to those close to her, Sophia had been rushed to the hospital following a suicide attempt at her home last week. While the exact circumstances remain under investigation, there are allegations that she had been the victim of bullying. Law enforcement has not yet confirmed those details.
Sophia’s mother, a single parent, and the rest of her family are devastated by the loss. Her grandmother described her as a “sweet child who loved animals” and “a good student, full of life.”
The family said they had been praying for a miracle throughout her hospitalization, with community members also offering support, prayers, and kindness during this difficult time.
Sophia’s cousin, 12-year-old Alexis Brewer, said she considered Sophia like a sister.
The family has expressed hope that Sophia’s story will help raise awareness about the dangers of bullying and the importance of suicide prevention. They also want to remind others that help is available through the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988.
