A family in Cahokia Heights is grappling with tragedy after Terrence Curry, 43, was fatally shot in his home Wednesday night. The St. Clair County Coroner’s Office confirmed Curry, who had recently celebrated his birthday, was pronounced dead at 8:46 p.m. at the scene on the 4900 block of Piggott Avenue.

Authorities have arrested 39-year-old Jerome D. Curry in connection with the shooting. He now faces multiple charges, including murder or intent to kill/injure, attempted murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery, and three counts of possessing a weapon as a previously convicted felon. The case is being handled by the St. Clair County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

The events unfolded around 7 p.m., when Cahokia Heights police responded to reports of shots fired. Officers discovered a woman with apparent gunshot wounds hiding behind a vehicle. She received immediate treatment and cooperated with investigators. Shortly afterward, police entered the Piggott Avenue home and found Terrence Curry deceased from gunshot injuries. Witnesses told authorities that Jerome Curry had shot his brother during the incident.

The situation escalated further as police pursued a vehicle linked to the crime scene, eventually locating it in the 2200 block of Birmingham Drive in Shiloh. Reports indicated that Jerome Curry was armed and holding a family hostage. Law enforcement agencies from multiple Metro East departments established a perimeter and deployed negotiators, who successfully secured the release of the hostages. Jerome Curry surrendered without further incident.

The Illinois State Police are assisting local authorities in the ongoing investigation. Officials have not released a motive for either the shooting or the hostage situation. This incident marks the fifth homicide reported in Cahokia Heights this year, according to local records.

A warrant for Jerome Curry’s arrest was issued and signed by a judge on Friday. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, emphasizing the importance of community safety and accountability.
