Cottage Hill Christian Teacher Nicole Staples Arrested in Alabama After Viral Video Shows Her Beating Child With Belt More Than 20 Times

A teacher at Cottage Hill Christian Academy in Mobile, Alabama, has been arrested after a graphic and disturbing video showing her beating her child with a belt went viral on social media. Nicole Staples, 44, was taken into custody on charges of willful abuse of a child under 18 and is scheduled to appear in court Friday for a bond hearing.

Authorities launched an investigation after the video — widely shared across multiple platforms — sparked outrage from parents, educators, and community members. In the footage, a woman believed to be Staples can be heard screaming obscenities at a young boy for not completing his chores. She then beats him repeatedly with a belt, striking him more than 20 times as he cries out in distress.

The assault escalates even further when Staples is seen dragging the boy by his hair, slinging him to the ground, and lifting him back up in the same manner. The brutality of the attack left many viewers stunned, and questions remain about who filmed the incident, when it occurred, and why the footage was posted to social media rather than being reported directly to authorities.

After becoming aware of the video, Cottage Hill Christian Academy announced that Staples had been terminated from her teaching position. School officials released a detailed statement emphasizing their commitment to student safety and explaining the steps taken once the allegations were brought to their attention.

According to the statement, school leadership was notified on November 19, 2025, about concerns involving the off-campus conduct of an elementary teacher toward her minor child at her private residence. Although the abuse did not take place on school property, administrators acted immediately by relieving Staples of her duties and placing her on administrative leave pending further review.

The school said it cooperated fully with both the City of Mobile Police Department and the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office. After law enforcement confirmed that the teacher had engaged in abusive conduct unrelated to her school responsibilities, an arrest was made and her employment was permanently terminated in accordance with school policy.

“Cottage Hill Christian Academy prioritizes the wellbeing of children above all else,” said Head of School Chris Brazell. “We will always act promptly, transparently, and responsibly when matters arise that may impact the safety or integrity of our school community.”

The school added that it will continue working closely with the Department of Human Resources, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, and the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office as the investigation moves forward.
