Jadyn Hamilton, Athens, Mississippi teen confesses to beating grandmother Ollie Hamilton to death at Smith Chapel Holiness Church in Monroe County

A 17-year-old Mississippi teen, Jadyn Hamilton, has confessed to beating his grandmother, 73-year-old Ollie Hamilton, to death at a local church in Monroe County, shocking the small Athens community where both lived and worshipped.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called Wednesday afternoon after a family member discovered Ollie Hamilton’s battered body near an outdoor area that led to the kitchen of Smith Chapel Holiness Church on Burr Road in Athens.

Investigators said evidence quickly pointed to her grandson, who was taken into custody later that night. Sheriff Kevin Crook confirmed that Jadyn Hamilton confessed to the brutal attack after being interviewed by authorities.

“The longer that investigation went, evidence started pointing in a certain direction,” Sheriff Crook said in a Facebook statement. “A young man had supposedly gone for help early on after the attack. We ended up bringing him in last night, and he confessed to the crime.”

Calling it a “tragedy of the worst kind,” Sheriff Crook described the devastating impact on the tight-knit community:

“You’ve got a beloved church member, family member, and community member killed — and you come to find out within 24 hours she was killed by another beloved family member.”

Crook added that the case underscores the importance of addressing emotional and behavioral struggles early, especially among youth:

“Try to learn from every tragedy. Were there signs? Were there things you can point back to and say, ‘Maybe we could have gotten this information to the right people’? A lot of stuff happens among our youth that isn’t communicated a lot of times.”

The sheriff described Ollie Hamilton as “a pillar of the church and community”, deeply loved by everyone who knew her.

“She was a pillar of the community, a pillar of the church, and somebody a lot of people counted on. It was obvious she was well-loved,” Crook told The Monroe Journal.

Authorities have not yet determined what led the teen to kill his grandmother, though investigators confirmed he had no prior criminal history.

Jadyn Hamilton remains held on a $500,000 bond as the investigation continues.
