A heated confrontation in Lamont, California, has gone viral after a woman — quickly labeled a “Triggered Karen” — called the police on a Mariachi performer for simply doing her job and playing traditional Mexican music.
The video, originally posted to TikTok by Alisson Cortes, shows her dressed in a full charro outfit, performing Mariachi songs outside a local venue on Voting Day. According to Alisson, she and her fellow musicians had been hired to perform at the site when a woman wearing a neck brace began filming them as soon as they arrived. At first, there were no problems — but once the woman exited the voting booth, the situation escalated.
In the clip, the two women can be seen arguing, with both talking over each other as tensions rise. At one point, Alisson asks if the music is bothering her. The woman snaps back, “Yes, it does! It bothers most of the people that have come in there.”
The argument continues briefly before the video cuts off, but according to Alisson, the woman later called the police in an attempt to stop the performance. When officers arrived, however, they sided with the Mariachi singer. “The cop literally laughed and told me, ‘Go ahead and continue singing,’” Alisson explained in a follow-up comment.
The “Triggered Karen” reportedly left the scene furious, while TikTok users flooded Alisson’s video with messages of support and celebration. Viewers mocked the woman for calling the cops over music and praised Alisson for standing up for her culture and profession.
One person commented, “On behalf of the TikTok Tías — we’re so proud of you, queen!” Another wrote, “She gave us outfit, she gave us culture, she gave us attitude — YESSS QUEEN, WE LOVE HER.” A third supporter added, “Good for you for standing up for not only yourself but for our culture, mija. Keep playing!”
The viral video has since become a symbol of pride for many in the Latino community, with fans rallying around Alisson for defending the joy and tradition of Mariachi music. What started as a “Triggered Karen” moment ended up turning into an uplifting reminder to embrace — not silence — cultural expression.
