A Louisiana sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed on Thanksgiving evening in what authorities say was a fatal family dispute that ended with a police chase and the arrest of the victim’s own brother.
Deputy Shaquille Guerin, 35, of the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office, was discovered lying in the street on Marigold Lane around 5:30 p.m. Thursday with at least one gunshot wound. Despite emergency medical efforts from responding deputies and EMS crews, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to investigators, the suspected shooter is Darius Guerin, 32, Shaquille’s younger brother, who fled the area moments after the gunfire.
Suspect Arrested After Refusing Traffic Stop
Authorities quickly identified Darius as the suspect, launching an area-wide search. Around 7 p.m., deputies with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office spotted his vehicle near Ames and Lapalco Boulevards. When officers attempted to pull him over, Darius refused to stop, leading to a pursuit.
The chase ended in the 100 block of Jean Lafitte Boulevard in Lafitte, where the suspect fled on foot. Deputies caught and arrested him shortly afterward. A firearm was recovered along the route he attempted to escape.
Darius Guerin is now facing a second-degree murder charge, authorities confirmed.
A Respected Deputy, Husband, and Father of Three
Deputy Shaquille Guerin had served eight years with the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office. He worked in the Uniform Patrol Division and also assisted in the Detective Bureau, earning a reputation for professionalism, positivity, and dedication.
Sheriff Michael Tregre released a statement expressing the department’s grief:
“Shaquille did his job well. He had the heart of a public servant. He carried and showed positivity as an employee for the St. John Sheriff’s Office and teammate to his coworkers.”
Guerin leaves behind his wife, Roxanne, and their three children.
Community in Mourning
The sheriff’s office urged the public to keep Guerin’s family in their thoughts and prayers as the investigation continues.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our colleague and friend… We ask that you keep his family in your prayers,” the department wrote.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is handling the homicide investigation.
