A tragic murder-suicide claimed the lives of Paul Arthur Merchant, 62, and his wife Alessandra Amador Merchant, 38, on Friday night at their home on Creekwood Drive in Greensboro, authorities confirmed.

Officers responded around 9:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a family disturbance. Upon arrival, a man inside the residence opened fire, prompting a shelter-in-place alert for nearby residents. No officers were harmed during the incident, which involved specialized police teams and negotiation efforts.

Authorities were able to safely release a juvenile from the home before entering and discovering both Paul and Alessandra Merchant with fatal gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have described the incident as a murder-suicide.

The couple, married in 2011, had one son named Paul. Alessandra, originally from São Paulo, Brazil, worked as Operations Manager for Fintech company Bedrock Technology.

According to Greensboro Police, her death marks the 34th homicide in the city this year. Investigators have confirmed that all parties and suspects involved have been identified, and next of kin have been notified.

During the incident, an alert meant for a small group of residents was mistakenly sent countywide after the scene was cleared around 2:30 a.m. Officials are working to determine the cause of the error.
