Tragedy struck the Southwest Side of Chicago over the weekend as 17-year-old Rodrigo Franco, a high school senior and part-time Burger King drive-thru worker, was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening at the fast-food restaurant in the Archer Heights neighborhood on South Pulaski Road, according to police. Witnesses reported that a Jeep SUV pulled up to the Burger King and opened fire, striking Franco in the head while he was working inside the drive-thru. He was rushed in critical condition to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The SUV fled the scene in an unknown direction.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the shooting was random or if Franco had been specifically targeted, leaving the community searching for answers. Area One detectives continue to investigate the case, but no suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made to date.

“He was a 17-year-old boy who enjoyed working and being with his family and friends. Rodrigo was a nice, gentle, smart young man. He never did any wrong to anyone or ever wanted to harm anyone. Today, I hope you guys can help me and my family pay for the funeral expenses.”
Neighbors were left shocked and saddened by the senseless violence. Sylvia Romero, who lives nearby, told WGN News:
“I don’t know why they would have shot him. Rodrigo and his older brother were good people who were quiet and not gang-affiliated. No parties, quiet people, very kind, respectful boys.”
The community continues to mourn the loss of a promising young life, while authorities work to determine the motive and identify those responsible.
Rodrigo Franco’s family and friends have called for justice and urged anyone with information to come forward to Chicago Police Department Area One detectives.
This tragic shooting adds to the ongoing concern over gun violence in Chicago, especially involving young people and innocent bystanders.
