SRC Member Musawenkosi Gcabashe Mavuso Hands Himself Over to Police After Alleged Sexual Assault at WITS Library

Musawenkosi Gcabashe Mavuso, a member of the University of the Witwatersrand’s (Wits) Student Representative Council (SRC), has handed himself over to Hillbrow Police Station following allegations that he raped a fellow student at the WITS library.

According to reports reaching OUR DESKS, the alleged victim, a 20-year-old student, claimed the assault took place on a Friday evening at around 8:30 PM. She immediately reported the incident to Campus Control, which confirmed that CCTV footage of the encounter was reviewed.

Mavuso, a third-year Bachelor of Education student and member of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) political party, has sparked widespread outrage on campus following the incident.

The alleged victim expressed the severe emotional impact of the attack, stating that she has been left feeling suicidal and unable to prepare for her upcoming exams. Her post on social media detailed the trauma and the distress she has endured since the alleged assault.

The case comes on the heels of a student protest yesterday, during which WITS students gathered at Mavuso’s residence demanding accountability for the alleged sexual assault. Police have now confirmed that Mavuso was detained following these developments.

Authorities have yet to release further statements regarding the case, which continues to generate significant attention both on campus and across social media.
