A Toronto mother who suffocated her two young sons just nine days after her husband died of cancer has been sentenced to life in prison. The woman had also attempted to end her own life.
On Monday, 27-year-old Vanessa Collias was sentenced after admitting to killing her sons Yiannis, 5, and Dimitri, 4, in December 2023, shortly after the death of her 72-year-old husband, Costa, who had been battling aggressive leukemia, according to the Toronto Star.
Collias sobbed in court as she entered her guilty plea. Investigators said that at the time of the boys’ deaths, the overwhelmed mother had covered their mouths and noses with her hands while singing “You Are My Sunshine.” After killing the boys, Collias jumped from the balcony of their Toronto apartment in an attempt to take her own life as well.
Responding officers discovered a devastating scene: the two brothers lying in front of a television playing a children's show, their funeral clothes laid out beside them along with their birth certificates, a photograph of their recently deceased father, and a cross.
According to a psychiatric assessment, Collias had attempted to take her own life several times before the final incident — first by trying to suffocate herself, then by cutting her wrist, and later by attempting to hang herself in the shower. When none of those attempts succeeded, she jumped from the apartment balcony, resulting in catastrophic injuries that left her a paraplegic.
She told the psychiatrist that she fully understood “the world would view her actions as both morally and legally wrong,” but said she was consumed by grief and unable to see any way forward.

Grant explained that Collias had been diagnosed with adjustment disorder, a condition worsened by a background of abuse and the sudden loss of stability she experienced when her husband died — leaving her overwhelmed and emotionally shattered.
Although Collias pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of second-degree murder, she was still sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 18 years.
Court documents note that Collias acknowledged knowing her actions were wrong but hoped people would understand the mental state she was in. She believed her intent had been to “save” her sons and reunite with her husband so the family could be together again.
Her husband died on December 1, 2023. Just nine days later, on December 10, Collias killed their children. She told the court she had been completely drained after serving as her husband’s round-the-clock caregiver and watching him slowly deteriorate.
“When he died, I became a single mother overnight,” she said. “I broke. I couldn’t push no more.”
