An 18-year-old West Sayville teen, Emily Finn, was shot and killed on Wednesday, Nov. 26, after visiting the Nesconset, N.Y., home of her 17-year-old ex-boyfriend, according to Suffolk County Police. The teen boy—whose name is not being released due to his age—then allegedly turned the gun on himself, shooting himself in the face.
Authorities say the tragedy occurred just days after the pair had recently broken up.
Police: Teen Boy Shot Ex-Girlfriend, Then Himself
According to a statement from Suffolk County Police obtained by PEOPLE, Finn had gone to the home to return belongings following the breakup. Inside the residence, the 17-year-old allegedly shot her before shooting himself. His parents immediately called 911.
Emergency responders pronounced Emily Finn dead at the scene at approximately 11:10 a.m. The teen boy was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical but stable condition.

A Promising Student Remembered
Finn graduated from Sayville High School in June and had recently begun her freshman year at SUNY Oneonta, where she was studying Childhood/Elementary Education with a minor in Dance, according to her social media. She previously graduated from Cherry Avenue School in 2024.
Investigators Provide Additional Context
Suffolk County Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer, commanding officer of the department’s homicide bureau, told Greater Long Island that Finn went to her ex-boyfriend’s home to return his belongings after their breakup—a visit that tragically turned fatal.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
