Montgomery authorities are investigating an early morning apartment fire at Woodley Terrace Apartments that claimed the life of Billy “BJ” Caldwell, an 8-year-old boy, and left two other people critically injured.
The fire was reported just after 8 a.m. at the apartment complex located in the 3900 block of Woodley Road, according to Montgomery Fire officials. Multiple fire and rescue units were dispatched to the scene after reports of a possible structure fire.
When first responders arrived, they found a two-story residential building with visible smoke and flames. Due to the severity of the fire, the incident was quickly upgraded to a second alarm, prompting additional firefighting resources to respond.
Fire officials confirmed that one child died as a result of the blaze, while two other individuals were transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Authorities later identified the child as Billy “BJ” Caldwell.
The cause of the fire has not yet been released, and investigators are continuing to examine the scene to determine what led to the deadly incident.
