A Texas woman has been arrested and charged after authorities say she hid razor blades inside loaves of bread and baked goods at multiple Walmart stores in Biloxi, Mississippi, putting unsuspecting shoppers at serious risk.
Police identified the suspect as Camille Benson, 33, who was taken into custody on Tuesday, Dec. 16, following reports of razor blades being discovered in banana nut muffins and multiple loaves of bread sold at two Walmart locations, according to local outlet WLOX.
Benson has been charged with attempted mayhem, and her bond was set at $100,000, according to a press release from the Biloxi Police Department.
Officers first responded on Dec. 15 to a Walmart location in the 2600 block of C.T. Switzer Sr. Drive after customers reported finding razor blades embedded in bread products displayed for sale. Later the same day, police received a similar complaint at a second Walmart in the 2000 block of Pass Road, authorities said.
According to Lt. Candace Young, customers reported finding razor blades at both a Walmart Supercenter and a Walmart Neighborhood Market. Store employees told police that the first known incident occurred on Dec. 5, when a customer discovered a blade in a loaf of bread purchased at the Supercenter. A second report followed on Dec. 8, involving bread purchased at the Neighborhood Market. After inspecting store inventory, employees located additional loaves containing razor blades, prompting a wider investigation. Surveillance video from the stores helped police identify Benson as a person of interest. Footage reportedly shows her leaving one of the stores while carrying a white bag, according to WLOX.
Police later received information placing the suspect in the 1000 block of Division Street, where officers located and arrested Benson without incident. She is currently being held at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center.
Authorities have urged anyone who recently purchased bread or baked goods from Walmart locations in Biloxi to carefully inspect their items and immediately contact police if any foreign objects are found. In a statement, Walmart said it has removed and inspected all potentially affected products and is cooperating fully with law enforcement. “The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” the company said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
