A Kissimmee man, David Bets, was fatally shot during a standoff with law enforcement on Friday, an encounter that partially unfolded on Facebook Live. According to authorities, the confrontation escalated after Bets—who had been experiencing a severe mental health crisis—fired his weapon, prompting deputies to return fire.
Bets Livestreamed Portions of the Crisis
Before the fatal shooting, Bets appeared distressed during a Facebook Live broadcast that drew immediate attention from friends, family, and community members. Loved ones say he had recently posted messages indicating he was struggling with his mental health.
Family members also reported that Bets remained on the phone with his sister throughout the tense situation, and that she had been making every effort to keep him calm as deputies surrounded the residence.
Authorities: Bets Fired First Before Deputies Returned Fire
According to statements from law enforcement, deputies responded to a call involving an armed individual in crisis. Officials say that when Bets eventually exited the residence, he lay face down on the ground while still holding a handgun.
Just before 9 p.m., investigators say Bets fired his weapon. Deputies returned fire, striking him. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Family and Community React
Loved ones described Bets as a young man who had long battled mental health challenges. Many expressed heartbreak on social media, noting that the fear and pain in his voice during the livestream made the crisis even more difficult to watch unfold.
Advocates say the tragedy highlights the ongoing need for expanded mental-health crisis response resources, especially in situations involving armed individuals.
Investigation Ongoing
As with all officer-involved shootings, the incident remains under investigation. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the number of deputies involved or whether body-camera footage will be made public.
More information is expected as investigators continue to review evidence and interview witnesses.
