Rocky Mount, VA — Authorities have identified 41-year-old Tina Marie (Brown) Spencer and 55-year-old James Randolph Smith as the two individuals found dead in an apparent murder-suicide Friday morning, leaving the Rocky Mount community grief-stricken.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 9:00 a.m. on December 5, 2025, to a 911 call reporting an unresponsive person inside a vehicle near the 1400 block of Patti Road. When they arrived, deputies discovered both Spencer and Smith deceased in a red Honda SUV, each suffering fatal gunshot wounds.

Investigators say the two were known to each other and that early findings strongly indicate a murder–suicide, though final determinations will come from the Roanoke Medical Examiner’s Office. Authorities described the incident as isolated and did not release additional details regarding motive or the weapon involved.
