WILMINGTON, Delaware — Cpl. Matthew “Ty” Snook, 34, of the Delaware State Police, was killed in the line of duty on December 23, 2025, after helping protect others during a shooting incident at a DMV office near Wilmington. Authorities identified Avery Young as the suspect involved.
Snook, a 10-year veteran of the Delaware State Police, was working an overtime assignment when the shooting occurred. According to police, he acted heroically by helping push a nearby employee out of harm’s way before sustaining critical injuries. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.
Colleagues described Snook as dependable, professional, and deeply committed to his work. Outside of duty, he was known as a devoted husband and father to a young daughter.A Delaware native, Snook graduated from the University of Maryland, where he was a member of the wrestling team. Community leaders, officials, and fellow officers have expressed condolences, remembering him as a trusted trooper, loving family man, and dedicated public servant whose loss has deeply affected the state.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
