Man Killed in Franklinton Crash Involving Columbus Police Cruiser Identified as Corey Tinnes

Authorities have identified the man killed in a early-Sunday crash involving a Columbus police cruiser in Franklinton as 30-year-old Corey Tinnes. The collision occurred at a busy intersection as an officer was responding to a burglary call with emergency lights and sirens activated.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the fatal crash, which happened around 2:50 a.m. at the intersection of West Broad Street and Central Avenue. According to Columbus police, the eastbound marked cruiser entered the intersection with its emergency equipment on and collided with a northbound white Chevrolet Silverado driven by Tinnes.

Tinnes was transported to a local hospital but died from his injuries shortly after arrival, the Franklin County Coroner’s Office confirmed. The Columbus police officer involved—whose name has not been released—was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been placed on leave pending the investigation.

A witness, Savina Mohammed, described the crash as “a big bang,” saying she saw the police cruiser travel through a red light before striking the turning vehicle. “They had their sirens on… they went through the light, hit the car,” she told reporters. Mohammed later expressed condolences to Tinnes’ loved ones: “I don’t know who he is, but my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

In a statement, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #9 President Brian Steel called the collision a tragic incident and emphasized that a fact-based investigation is underway. “If the officer violated a policy or a law, the officer will be held accountable,” Steel said, noting consequences could range from retraining to discipline, termination, or potential criminal charges depending on the findings.

Columbus police confirm that ABC 6 has requested the crash report, dashcam and body-camera footage, and the 911 calls related to the incident. Further details will be released once the investigation progresses.
