Gonzales, Louisiana — A Gonzales man says he was confronted and harassed while fishing at a neighborhood pond on Cessna Street, prompting concerns over aggressive behavior and alleged racial harassment. The incident, which was captured on video, has since circulated on social media.
According to Marlon Cox, he was visiting a friend who lives in a gated community along Cessna Street when the encounter occurred. Cox said his friend was briefly occupied but told him it was fine to fish at the nearby pond while he waited.
Encounter Turns Confrontational
Cox said that as he was preparing to leave the pond, he noticed a large truck driving aggressively nearby.
“When I realized he was trailing me, I figured I was going the wrong way,” Cox explained. “I tried to back into a driveway to turn around, but that’s when he pulled his truck in front of mine and blocked me in.”
Cox said he attempted to de-escalate the situation by gesturing to the driver to roll down his window, but received no response.
“Nothing — just a death stare,” Cox said.
Video Captures Escalation
Video footage recorded by Cox appears to show the driver — later identified on social media as Matt Madere of Ace Physical Therapy — using racial slurs and telling Cox he did not belong in the neighborhood and needed to leave.
Cox said the situation escalated further when the driver blocked the roadway again as Cox attempted to exit the area.
“That’s when I started recording,” Cox said. “I figured things could go south.”
Second Confrontation Alleged
Cox said he believed the encounter had ended after the driver initially left the area. However, he alleges the driver returned later after picking up children from a nearby bus stop.
“He drove through my friend’s yard, came up the driveway, and confronted us again,” Cox said. “He made accusations, told lies, and then jumped out of his truck — I felt like he was trying to assault me.”
Cox also stated that he believes the driver may have been intoxicated at the time, though this has not been confirmed by authorities.
No Charges Filed
As of now, no charges have been filed in connection with the incident. Because the matter remains under review and no criminal charges have been announced, the driver’s face has been blurred in shared footage.
Authorities have not released an official statement regarding the confrontation.
