Sherry Darlene Lydon Kills Husband, Wounds Son in Dyer County Shooting, Dies in Crash With Semi

Dyer County, Tennessee — Authorities are investigating a tragic domestic-related murder-suicide that left two family members dead and one critically injured early Wednesday morning, according to the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said Sherry Darlene Lydon, 60, fatally shot her husband, William John Lydon Jr., 60, and wounded her 24-year-old son at their home on Tar Hill Road on December 18.

What Authorities Say Happened

Deputies responded to reports of a shooting at the family’s residence early that morning. Investigators determined that William Lydon died from a single gunshot wound. The couple’s adult son was struck twice and was airlifted to a regional trauma center, where he remains in critical condition, authorities said.

After the shooting, Sherry Lydon fled the scene in her vehicle. According to investigators, she later intentionally collided head-on with a flatbed semi-truck on a nearby highway in what authorities described as a suicide attempt.

She was transported to a regional hospital, where she later died from her injuries, Sheriff Jeff Box confirmed. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

Mental Health Factors Cited

Sheriff Box said investigators believe Sherry Lydon had been experiencing significant mental health challenges following a recent surgery. These reportedly included night terrors, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. Authorities stated there was no evidence of illegal substance use involved.

The sheriff’s office emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that all contributing factors surrounding the shooting and crash are being examined.

Community Safety and Support

Officials stressed that the incident appears isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lydon family during this incredibly difficult time,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
