Nurse Novyrose Mejia Dies After Being Hit by Car Outside Sacramento VA Medical Center

Novyrose Mejia, a beloved nurse at UC Davis and the Sacramento VA Medical Center, has died after being struck by a car outside the VA facility on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025.

Authorities report that Mejia was hit as a driver pulled into the parking lot near the emergency room entrance. She fell and struck her head on the pavement. Emergency responders initially treated her at the VA Medical Center before transferring her to UC Davis Medical Center, where she later passed away.

UC Davis Health issued a statement honoring Mejia as “a cherished nurse known for her dedication to patients and her family.” Colleagues described her as compassionate, hardworking, and a devoted advocate for those in her care.

VA Sierra Pacific Network spokesperson Armenthis Lester extended the agency’s condolences, saying, “Our hearts are with her family, loved ones, and all who had the privilege of working alongside her.”

Mejia, known affectionately as “Novy,” was a wife and mother of two sons. A GoFundMe campaign set up in her memory describes her as a “selfless nurse who spent her life caring for others — comforting the sick, advocating for her patients, and answering God’s call to serve with humility and grace.”

As of Wednesday, Dec. 17, the GoFundMe has raised over $34,000 to support Mejia’s family with medical and funeral expenses.

Local authorities, including the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office and Rancho Cordova Police Department, are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
