A father and son died in what police have described as an apparent murder-suicide in Mansfield, Ohio.
Chris Casler, 40, and his 9‑year‑old son, Oliver Casler, were found inside their home on Saturday, Nov. 29, after officers responded to a report of two individuals with gunshot wounds. Oliver was rushed to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital where he later died. Chris Casler was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the incident appears to be a murder-suicide, though detectives with the Mansfield Division of Police and the Richland County Coroner’s Office are continuing their investigation.
Casler’s girlfriend was in the home at the time but was not injured. Neighbors told Cleveland 19 News that she heard a single “pop” before discovering what had happened.
Nearby residents and family friends expressed disbelief, describing Chris as a devoted father who adored his son. Frances Gray, a friend and neighbor, said Chris was “an amazing guy” and “a good friend” who “loved his son” and “gave people chances that didn’t need chances.” Her husband, Shawn McArdle, echoed the disbelief, saying he could not imagine Chris harming Oliver.
Investigators continue to work to determine what led to the tragedy.
