A Detroit teen who claimed she found a newborn abandoned on her family’s porch has admitted she fabricated the story after secretly giving birth alone on Thanksgiving. The incident has sparked widespread attention — and a GoFundMe campaign that has now surpassed $20,000 to help the struggling family.
Teen Gave Birth Alone, Unaware She Was Pregnant
16-year-old Peyton Peoples said she had no idea she was pregnant until her water broke while she was home alone on Nov. 27. Her mother, Kira Peoples, was at a family member’s house for Thanksgiving.
“I was laying in bed and my water broke, so I went into the bathroom and had Paxton,” Peyton told FOX 2 Detroit. “I cleaned him off and then looked up on TikTok how to cut my umbilical cord. I cut the cord and then wiped him off again.”
Peyton said the baby was born in the toilet after just three pushes.
Teen Initially Told Mother the Baby Was Left on the Porch
Terrified and unsure what to do, Peyton invented a story that a stranger had left the newborn outside their west side Detroit home. She told her mother the baby was found on the porch — even though Paxton never left the bathroom.

Police Grew Suspicious; Hospital Tests Confirmed the Truth
When 911 was called, Detroit police officers quickly became suspicious of the account. Peyton was brought to Children’s Hospital of Michigan, where medical tests confirmed she was the baby’s mother. Facing the evidence, she admitted she had given birth on her own.
“It’s hard. It was already hard for her to raise us, and that just added another burden on her back, and I didn’t want to do that,” Peyton said, explaining why she panicked and lied.
Family Faces Hardship, But Baby Paxton Called “A Blessing”
Kira, a single mother raising four children, has been struggling financially. Peyton’s father was shot and killed during a robbery just seven months earlier.
Despite the shocking circumstances, Kira said her grandson is a blessing:
“The baby is always a blessing. It was just that my baby went through this by herself.”
Kira said she plans to continue working midnight shifts while Peyton returns to school. “We’re going to figure it out,” she said.
GoFundMe Surges Past $20,000
The viral story prompted an outpouring of community support. A GoFundMe created for Peyton, baby Paxton, and the family has already exceeded $20,000, helping them with essentials and stability as they adjust to the sudden arrival of the newborn.
Both Peyton and Paxton are stable and receiving medical care. Children’s Protective Services is reviewing the case, standard procedure in situations involving unassisted childbirth and initial false statements.
