Shireen Afkari, a 32-year-old Strava employee, has been fired from her job after being arrested for public intoxication following a viral incident in which she verbally and physically assaulted restaurant staff and a patron at Hazie’s restaurant in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley.
The incident, which occurred Saturday night, was captured on video and shared online by Hazie’s bartender Miguel Marchese, quickly igniting widespread backlash and leading to Afkari’s identification.
According to the San Francisco Police Department, officers responded around 9:41 p.m. to a disturbance at a business on the 500 block of Hayes Street. Afkari, who was accompanied by Christian Bruchman, 33, was arrested at the scene and transported to San Francisco County Jail on a charge of public intoxication.
In the now-viral footage, Afkari is seen berating staff while recording them with her phone, entering restricted areas of the restaurant, striking a patron’s phone, and attempting to swing at employees after being refused further alcohol service due to her intoxicated state.
Marchese told KRON4 that the situation escalated after management decided not to serve the couple additional drinks.
“They were clearly intoxicated and being verbally aggressive with staff,” he said. “Once we stopped service, everything spiraled.”
Video shows Afkari being escorted out of the restaurant, where she continued to shout profanities and engage physically with staff. At one point, she grabbed Marchese by the hair outside the establishment, pulling forcefully until he managed to break free by tossing her phone away to distract her.
Moments later, Afkari is seen stumbling and falling face-first onto the sidewalk during the chaotic exit. The confrontation continued briefly outside before police arrived and detained both individuals.Following the widespread circulation of the footage, online users identified Afkari as a marketing manager at fitness app Strava. The company later confirmed her termination in a public statement.
“We are aware of an employee who exhibited extremely concerning off-hours behavior,” Strava said. “We don’t condone violence of any kind. This past Monday, we made the decision to end the individual’s employment.”
Afkari, who previously worked at Credit Karma, has since deleted her social media accounts and has not publicly commented or apologized for the incident.
Hazie’s restaurant reported an outpouring of community support following the episode, while the incident reignited broader discussions about public behavior, accountability, and the real-world consequences of viral exposure.
The case remains closed with no additional charges announced beyond public intoxication.
