Diane Crawford, a longtime school bus driver, has raised more than $4,000 through GoFundMe after being fired following a controversy involving a sign she posted on her school bus, according to information obtained this week.
Crawford, 66, says she was terminated after posting what school officials described as a “racially insensitive” message on the window of her bus. The sign read: “Out of respect to English-only students, there will be no speaking Spanish on this bus.”
Following her dismissal, Crawford is now publicly sharing her side of the story for the first time.
“I never imagined that writing a note would cost me everything,” Crawford said.
According to Crawford, her intent was not to offend but to maintain order on the bus. She said her decision was rooted in concern for student behavior rather than language or ethnicity.
Crawford worked as a self-employed owner-operator and was subcontracted through Rohrer Bus to serve the Juniata County School District for the past 12 years. In total, she said she has driven a school bus in the district for more than 30 years.
She stated that shortly after posting the sign, she received an overnight call from her supervisor informing her that her contract with Rohrer Bus had been terminated.
The loss of her job, Crawford said, has had a significant financial and emotional impact.
“I don’t know what else to do,” she said. “I’m on Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP now. I had to go on antidepressants because of this.”
Supporters later launched a GoFundMe campaign, which has since raised over $4,000 to help Crawford cover living expenses following her termination.
Neither Rohrer Bus nor the Juniata County School District has released additional details regarding the decision to end Crawford’s contract.
