A Minneapolis man shot and killed by federal agents during an enforcement operation on Saturday has been identified as Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old registered nurse and U.S. citizen.
Pretti was employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs and worked as a registered nurse. He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and held a valid permit to carry a firearm, according to information confirmed by officials.
Federal authorities said the shooting occurred during a targeted operation in Minneapolis. Pretti was armed at the time of the encounter and was fatally shot by federal agents at the scene. He was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey condemned the incident, stating that video footage shows masked federal agents “pummeling one of our constituents and shooting him to death.” Frey criticized the presence and conduct of federal agents operating within the city and called for accountability.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz echoed those concerns, urging President Donald Trump to pull ICE and federal immigration agents out of Minneapolis and allow the state to lead an independent investigation into the shooting.
Following the fatal incident, federal officials reported that approximately 200 individuals gathered at the scene, with authorities describing the crowd as obstructing and assaulting law enforcement officers. Crowd control measures were deployed in response.
The shooting has intensified tensions between state and federal officials, as well as within the Minneapolis community, as questions continue to mount over the circumstances surrounding Pretti’s death and the broader federal operation underway in the city.
The investigation remains ongoing.
