Federal Agents Shoot and Kill Armed Minneapolis Man During Arrest, Sparking Outcry and Protests

Minneapolis authorities are investigating a fatal shooting involving federal law enforcement after a 37-year-old armed man was shot and killed Saturday morning. The incident occurred at the intersection of West 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue during a targeted operation by U.S. Border Patrol agents.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) identified the man as a White Minneapolis resident and U.S. citizen. According to DHS, the man approached officers armed with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and two magazines. Officers attempted to disarm him, but he “violently resisted,” prompting one agent to fire defensive shots. Medics attempted to provide aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Video footage from the scene captured the tense moments of the shooting, which DHS described as a defensive action, warning that the suspect appeared intent on inflicting maximum harm. Following the shooting, approximately 200 bystanders arrived, obstructing law enforcement efforts and leading authorities to implement crowd control measures.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara described the situation as an “unlawful assembly” and called on the public to remain calm. He confirmed that MPD, with support from the Minnesota State Patrol, Hennepin and Ramsey County sheriffs, and suburban departments, responded to handle the surge in emergency calls. Fire crews assisted in extinguishing two small fires started in the area. The National Guard had also been on standby prior to the incident.

The shooting drew swift condemnation from city and state officials. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called for an end to the federal operation and criticized the presence of armed agents in the city, stating, “How many more lives need to be lost before this administration realizes that a political and partisan narrative is not as important as American values?”

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz echoed Frey’s concerns, demanding that federal agents withdraw and allowing state authorities to lead the investigation. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith called on ICE to leave the state to ensure local law enforcement could secure the scene, while Rep. Ilhan Omar described the incident as “an execution by immigration enforcement,” condemning the federal response as unconstitutional and terrorizing for the community.

The DHS Border Patrol Union defended the agents’ actions, emphasizing that officers are trained to protect themselves and warning that inflammatory political rhetoric could endanger both law enforcement and the public.

This shooting follows heightened tensions in Minneapolis surrounding federal immigration enforcement, including the January 7 fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent, which sparked nationwide protests. Officials in Minnesota have repeatedly criticized the federal presence and the handling of these operations.

Local authorities continue to investigate the incident, with law enforcement requesting the public to submit any photos or videos that may help preserve evidence.

This is an ongoing story, and updates are expected as investigations continue.
