Joseph Andrew Bragg, 28, Charged with Kidnapping and Sexually Assaulting 7-Year-Old Zimmerman Girl

A 28-year-old Minnesota man has been charged with the shocking kidnapping and sexual assault of a 7-year-old girl from Zimmerman, highlighting a harrowing case that has left the community shaken.

Joseph Andrew Bragg of International Falls faces serious charges in Sherburne County District Court, including kidnapping to facilitate a felony or flight and first-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a child. Authorities say the victim, identified as Brynlee Nelson, was abducted on the afternoon of Wednesday, January 21, 2026, after being dropped off by her school bus.

The girl’s mother reported her missing around 6:30 p.m. when it became clear she had not returned home and was not with any authorized guardian. Surveillance footage showed Brynlee walking toward her home shortly after being dropped off, only to turn back toward the bus stop and disappear from view.

Investigators traced Bragg’s prior interaction with the family online. In December, he had contacted the girl’s mother through Facebook, posing as someone interested in childcare work in the Zimmerman-Princeton area. The mother initially accepted a friend request but later realized she did not know him and blocked him.

Bragg was tracked using cell phone location data, leading authorities to identify him driving a white 2025 Dodge Ram rental truck with Tennessee plates southbound toward Iowa. An Amber Alert was issued, prompting a coordinated search across multiple agencies.

Bragg was arrested early Thursday morning, January 22, at approximately 12:34 a.m. near the Trails Travel Center and Love’s Truck Stop, roughly 140 miles south of Zimmerman and 12 miles from the Iowa border. Police recovered Brynlee safely from the truck’s backseat, partially hidden behind a large red suitcase and other belongings.

Further investigation revealed Bragg had left another car at a Hamel residence and used a Lyft ride to transport him and the child to a Ramada Inn in Plymouth, where he had reserved a room from December 27, 2025, through January 21, 2026. Hotel surveillance footage showed Bragg entering alone with a heavy suitcase, corroborating investigators’ timeline.

A forensic interview and medical examination confirmed that Brynlee had been sexually assaulted, according to prosecutors. Bragg declined to speak with law enforcement following his arrest and remains in custody awaiting further legal proceedings.

This case has intensified concerns about online safety, the vetting of childcare providers, and the security of children in Minnesota communities, as authorities continue to investigate the full scope of Bragg’s activities.
