A Florida labor and delivery nurse has been terminated from her position after a viral TikTok video showed her making graphic and violent remarks about White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who recently announced she is pregnant with her second child.
Alexis ‘Lexie’ Lawler, formerly employed at Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital, appeared in the video expressing that it “gave [her] great joy” to wish Leavitt would suffer a fourth-degree tear during childbirth — the most severe type of obstetric injury — while using explicit and profane language. The clip quickly spread across social media, drawing widespread condemnation.
Baptist Health South Florida confirmed that Lawler is no longer employed with the health system. In a statement, the hospital emphasized that her remarks “do not reflect our values or the standards we expect of healthcare professionals.” The statement added: “While personal opinions are respected, there is no place in healthcare for language or behavior that calls into question a caregiver’s ability to provide compassionate, unbiased care.”
The controversy also caught the attention of Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer, who said he contacted hospital leadership upon learning of the video. He condemned the nurse’s comments on social media, writing: “These disgusting comments have no place in medicine or in our community.”Following her termination, a GoFundMe campaign titled ‘Help Lexie Lawler Fight Retaliation for Speaking Out’ was created, suggesting that Lawler lost her job for expressing her First Amendment-protected views. The fundraiser seeks financial support for her legal defense and living expenses. As of now, Florida’s nursing board has not publicly indicated whether Lawler’s license is under review.
The incident has sparked a larger debate online about the limits of personal expression for healthcare professionals, particularly when public comments clash with professional ethics and patient safety expectations.
