A 21-year-old man identified as Austin Tucker Martin was fatally shot by law enforcement after authorities say he entered the secured perimeter of Mar-a-Lago early Sunday morning while armed with a shotgun and carrying a fuel can.
According to the United States Secret Service, the incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. when security personnel detected an unauthorized individual inside the protected grounds of the Palm Beach estate. Agents and a deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office confronted Martin and ordered him to drop the items he was holding.
Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said the suspect lowered the fuel container but raised the shotgun into what officers described as a firing position. The officers then opened fire, killing him at the scene. No law enforcement personnel were injured.
Background and Investigation
Authorities say Martin had recently been reported missing by his family in North Carolina and is believed to have driven south to Florida, where investigators think he obtained the weapon. A gun box was later recovered from his vehicle. Law enforcement stated he was not previously known to local authorities.
Federal officials, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, are now working to determine motive and build a psychological profile. Investigators are reviewing digital evidence and social media posts that reportedly referenced conspiracy theories involving political corruption and the delayed release of files connected to Jeffrey Epstein.A relative described Martin as quiet, charitable, and coming from a family of strong Trump supporters, adding he had previously appeared afraid of firearms. Friends said he worked at a golf course and occasionally donated part of his pay.
Officials Respond
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt praised agents for acting quickly, while Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed federal agencies are coordinating on the investigation. FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau is dedicating all necessary resources to determine the suspect’s motive and movements before the breach.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he had spoken with Trump after the incident and confirmed the president and his family were safe. Trump was in Washington at the time and not present at the Florida property.
Ongoing Questions
Authorities have not yet said how many shots were fired or precisely how Martin gained access to the inner perimeter. Investigators are asking residents near the estate to review surveillance footage for anything suspicious.
The incident marks the latest security scare connected to Trump, who previously survived a 2024 assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, where gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks was killed by snipers moments after opening fire.
Officials stress the Mar-a-Lago case remains under active investigation, and further details — including a confirmed motive — have not yet been released.
