Police quickly identified 22-year-old Sam’on Andrew Smith as a suspect. He was taken into custody at his mother’s home and is now facing first-degree murder charges. Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive for the attack.
Family members told local news outlet WSOC that they believe Lang was attacked while stepping outside for a smoke break. Colleagues have since launched a GoFundMe to support her husband and raise funds for her funeral. The fundraiser describes Lang as a “beloved mother and committed wife” who brought “a motherly spirit” to her team, treating her colleagues like family and always giving her all.
Smith’s uncle, George Wise, told WSOC that he viewed his nephew as a “good dude” who was not involved in street violence or gangs. Smith remains in custody at Mecklenburg County Jail without bond.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this senseless shooting.
