A 21-year-old man believed to be Kyle Bassinga, a student at Georgia State University who had been missing since Feb. 15, was found dead in a wooded area of Fair Oaks Park, according to authorities and family members.
The discovery was reported to police at about 9:46 a.m. on Feb. 18, three days after witnesses said they saw a man walk into the same wooded section of the park around 4:28 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. Officials from the Cobb County Police have not publicly confirmed the identity, but Bassinga’s family told media outlets the deceased individual is their son.
Investigators say there is currently no evidence of foul play. The case remains under review pending results from the medical examiner’s final autopsy report.
After Bassinga was first reported missing, a video circulated online appearing to show a tense interaction between him and a police officer. In the footage, he questioned why he was asked to provide identification and suggested the request was unlawful. It appeared the officer was asking for student identification to verify his status.
Family members have urged the public to avoid speculation, saying their focus is on mourning and laying him to rest rather than debating theories about his death.
