Michael Brown Mugshot Released After Altercation With Students During Protest Near Grand Island Senior High School in Grand Island; Arrested on Child Abuse Charge Following Incident Linked to Student Walkout

Authorities say 54-year-old Michael Brown was arrested after a confrontation with students participating in a protest near Grand Island Senior High School in Nebraska.

According to Grand Island Public Schools, about 150 students took part in a student-led walkout shortly before 1:30 p.m. Monday. The district emphasized the demonstration was organized by students and not sponsored by school officials or staff.

Dean Elliott of the Grand Island Police said Brown drove past the group as they marched along College Street and shouted comments supporting ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement). Investigators say a juvenile then threw a water bottle that struck Brown in the face while he was inside his vehicle.

Police allege Brown exited his vehicle and chased a juvenile he believed threw the bottle, reportedly grabbing and striking a female student. Witnesses said several students then confronted Brown, knocking him to the ground and hitting and kicking him before a teacher intervened and broke up the altercation. The teacher was identified as being from nearby West Lawn Elementary School.

Brown was later arrested and booked on a child abuse charge. A juvenile male was also cited for assault in connection with the incident.

School officials said students who participated in the walkout were marked absent for the remainder of the day and were not allowed to return to campus afterward. The investigation remains ongoing.
