Kit Boucher and Jerry Boucher Identified as Eastham Couple Who Fell Through Ice Near First Encounter Beach While Walking Dog as Search Continues for Husband Presumed Dead

A Cape Cod couple who died after falling through ice while walking their dog has been identified by family as Kit and Jerry Boucher, according to officials and relatives.

The couple had been walking along Bee’s River in Eastham, Massachusetts, on Saturday morning when they broke through the frozen surface. First responders recovered Kit Boucher’s body roughly two hours after the initial emergency call. Search crews spent hours over the weekend trying to locate Jerry Boucher, but dangerous ice conditions forced them to suspend operations.

Authorities resumed search efforts Tuesday using divers, drones, and helicopters. Eastham Police Chief Adam Bohannan said crews hope to continue later in the week depending on weather and safety conditions, noting that shifting ice sheets pose serious risks to dive teams.

In a joint statement, the couple’s children, Katy Boucher and Amy Lawson, said their family is “devastated by the tragic loss” and expressed gratitude to first responders and the community for support while requesting privacy.

A small memorial has appeared along the riverbank, where flowers and a dog toy were placed in tribute. Community member Melon Regis said she came to pray and pay respects.

During the rescue attempt, two officers also fell into the water but managed to get out and were transported to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment. Their conditions have not been publicly updated.

Officials say they remain committed to recovering Jerry Boucher’s body to help bring closure to the family as the investigation and search continue.
