Milwaukee, WI – Tyrese Allen, 28, has been charged with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide and one count of first-degree intentional homicide of an unborn child following a deadly shooting on March 9 that left Giovanni McVicker and Maya Tobert dead, and their unborn child lost.
Incident Overview
According to the criminal complaint, the deadly encounter began when Giovanni McVicker reportedly asked his neighbor, Tyrese Allen, to turn down loud music so he could put his children to bed. The dispute escalated into a physical altercation, eventually spilling into the street. Surveillance footage shows Allen and McVicker standing face-to-face before Allen opened fire. McVicker was shot and pursued by Allen, who continued to shoot as McVicker ran into the street, eventually causing his death.
Maya Tobert’s Death
In the aftermath, Maya Tobert, McVicker’s pregnant girlfriend, was also shot and killed by Allen. She was reportedly 25-31 weeks pregnant, and tragically, her unborn child did not survive. The confrontation was captured in disturbing surveillance footage, which shows Allen picking up McVicker’s firearm and shooting Tobert shortly after McVicker was pursued into the street.
Charges and Bail
Tyrese Allen was arrested after witnesses and surveillance video revealed his role in the shootings. He is facing charges of first-degree intentional homicide, as well as first-degree intentional homicide of an unborn child, for the death of their baby. Allen was denied bail at his initial hearing, and a $500,000 cash bond was set for him. If convicted, Allen faces life in prison. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 23, 2026.
Family’s Grief
The killings have left friends and family devastated. Giovanni McVicker was a devoted father of five, with another child on the way. His family mourned the loss of a man who they described as loving and hard-working. Maya Tobert’s family, too, expressed their deep grief, emphasizing how the tragedy has left a permanent void in their lives.
In a GoFundMe page set up for the family, McVicker’s relatives wrote:
“Giovanni was a loving, devoted father to five beautiful children, with another precious baby on the way. In a heartbreaking act of violence, both Giovanni and his pregnant girlfriend were taken from this world far too soon... The pain our family is experiencing is truly unimaginable. Our hearts break not only for the loss of Giovanni, but for the future moments his children will miss with their father and the sibling they were preparing to welcome.”
Details of the Altercation and Shooting
The Milwaukee Police responded to the scene at 10:30 p.m. on March 9, after multiple shots rang out from the 6800 block of North Darien Street. Witnesses described a physical altercation between Tobert's sister and Allen’s baby mama, which then escalated when McVicker intervened. Allen allegedly started shooting after McVicker attempted to get him to back off.
After firing at McVicker, Allen pursued him into the street before shooting him several times. Allen then turned his gun on Tobert, and she was struck by gunfire. The authorities later recovered 41 spent casings from 9mm bullets at the scene.
Community Reactions
This tragic incident has rocked the Milwaukee community, with many calling it a senseless act of violence. A memorial for McVicker was set up at the site of the shooting, where friends and family have left flowers, candles, and keepsakes in his honor.
