At least 20 people, some critically, were injured Friday evening after a vehicle drove into pedestrians in Derby city centre, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Friar Gate, near the junction with Curzon Street and Cheapside, involving a black Suzuki Swift. Emergency services, including ambulance crews, responded immediately, providing medical attention at the scene and transporting several victims to local hospitals.
Derbyshire Police quickly located the vehicle and arrested a man in his 30s, identified as the driver. He remains in police custody as the investigation continues.
Police Investigation and Public Appeal
Derbyshire Police say the investigation is in its early stages and are appealing for witnesses. Authorities are specifically seeking anyone who saw a black Suzuki Swift being driven in the area around the time of the incident.
In a statement, police said:
“Our investigation is ongoing. We urge anyone who witnessed this incident or has relevant information to come forward urgently. Friar Gate is closed from the junction with Curzon Street/Cheapside to Ford Street and will remain so for a considerable time. While the incident is alarming, we do not believe there is any ongoing risk to the public.”
Residents and visitors are advised to avoid the area until further notice.
