A tragic incident in Ironwood Township has left a community mourning after 2-year-old Darwin Olson died after being struck by a vehicle, with authorities continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
Darwin’s mother, Jessica Fernandez, is now speaking out, sharing new details about the heartbreaking loss of her young son.
Toddler Found Dead After Early Morning Call
Deputies responded to a call at approximately 4:41 a.m. reporting a deceased child in Ironwood Township. Upon arrival, authorities confirmed that Darwin Olson was dead at the scene.
The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office, along with Michigan State Police—including a traffic crash reconstructionist—responded and began an investigation. Lake and Sunset roads were closed for several hours, reopening around 2:20 p.m.
Mother Says Driver Has Not Been Identified
According to Jessica Fernandez, Darwin was struck and killed by a vehicle near Ironwood. She told Northern News Now that she does not know who the driver is and believes the person responsible has not yet been identified.
Authorities have not released details about the driver or vehicle involved, and no arrests have been made. The cause of death remains under investigation.
Officials have stated there is no ongoing danger to the public and have promised updates as more information becomes available.
Community Honors Darwin Olson
The loss has deeply affected the local community.
A memorial of stuffed animals and flowers has been placed at the scene where Darwin was found. Dozens of community members gathered on Sunday to honor the toddler’s life, holding a balloon release in remembrance.
Darwin would have turned three years old on Saturday.

In the wake of the tragedy, a Bessemer-based nonprofit, Ben’s Closet, has begun raising funds to help the family cover funeral expenses.
Authorities Continue Investigation
The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation remains ongoing, but few details have been released about what led to the fatal incident.
“This is a tragic incident. Losing a young member of our community is very hard for us all,” Sheriff Jorge Cruz said in a statement.
