South Africa is mourning the loss of beloved entertainment figure Solmor Soli Philander, widely known as Soli or Solly Philander, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 65.

The cause of his death has not yet been made public. Family friend Basheer Losper confirmed his passing.

Philander leaves behind four biological children — sons Caleb and Ethan, and daughters Danya and Kyla. He also helped raise a foster daughter, Lauren, whom he and his former wife Toni supported through her final school year. He publicly announced his divorce in 2015.

A Television Pioneer

Soli Philander became a household name as the presenter of the Afrikaans music quiz show Liriekeraai during the early years of kykNET (DStv 144). He also hosted the popular game show Vat 'n Kans, further cementing his place in South African television history.

Often uncredited but fondly remembered, Philander was the performer inside the suit of Timothy Traddle, the tortoise character on the SABC children’s series Kideo — a role that brought joy to countless young viewers.

He also fronted the e.tv home improvement show Let's Fix It, which ended amid controversy after a public dispute between Philander and the channel, during which he accused the broadcaster of “unethical behaviour.”

Additionally, he served as host of the South African adaptation of Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?, showcasing his signature wit and charm.

Stage, Screen and International Work

Born Silamour Philander in Elsies River, he adopted “Solly” during his stand-up comedy career and one-man stage performances. His career began at The Space Theatre in Cape Town, where he appeared in productions such as Political Joke, The Car Cemetery, The Final Sting of the Dying Wasp, and Telling Tales.

Over the decades, he built an expansive acting résumé. His television credits included roles in Arendsvlei, Projek Dina, Devil's Peak, Parlement Parlement, Diamond Hunters, Hooten & the Lady, Dream School SA, Nie Vanwee die Duisternis, Off the Record, Reflections, and Dot en Kie.

In film, he appeared in Verkeerde Nommer, The Road to Mecca, Die Prince van Pretoria, Drumbeats, Kaalgat tussen die Daisies, Dias Santana, Snaaks Genoeg, Far from the Castle, and The Umbrella Men: Escape from Robben Island.

Philander also performed internationally, appearing on stages in South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States, Sweden, eSwatini, and Namibia.

Writer, Director and Voice in Media

Beyond acting and presenting, Soli Philander was deeply involved in children’s educational theatre. As a playwright, he wrote works including Take Two, Woeskroes, Hotnotsgot, and The Passion Gap. He wrote, directed, and starred in the cabaret Rosie September and was widely regarded as a prolific creative force.

He also spent two years hosting a show on Cape Talk and was heard on the Afrikaans station Punt Geselsradio.

A Lasting Legacy

From children’s television to prime-time drama, from stand-up comedy to serious stage work, Soli Philander’s influence spanned generations. His versatility, humor, and passion for storytelling made him one of South Africa’s most recognizable and beloved entertainment personalities.

Tributes are expected to continue pouring in as colleagues, friends, and fans remember a man whose voice, laughter, and creativity left an indelible mark on the industry.
